Few cities in all of
Florida can boast the type of explosive growth experienced by Clermont.
Once a thriving agricultural Mecca, today, new homes, not citrus dot the
rolling countryside. Clermont's population has grown a staggering
114% since the 2000 Census. This has brought a myriad of challenges
to the forefront, from traffic congestion on Highway 50 to providing
efficient public services to balancing continued growth with concerns for
the environment.
A new 4-story 32,000 sq.
ft. downtown city hall was recently dedicated, while expansion at South
Lake Hospital continues to meet the health care needs of citizens.
The USA Triathlon National Training Center and Wellness Center, adjacent
to the hospital, were completed two years ago. They offer aerobics and
weight training and patient rehabilitation. Facilities include human
performance labs, an Olympic size pool and outdoor track. Retail centers
are plentiful in Clermont, particularly along busy Highway 50 and south
off S.R. 27.
Clermont's location,
between Lakes Minneola and Minnehaha, makes it an ideal oasis for
fisherman and boaters alike. Clermont is on a chain of 15 lakes, each
connected by the Palatakaha River flowing north through the Harris Chain
all the way to the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville via the St. John's
River.
The city maintains 22 parks
including Hancock Park, with 5 baseball fields, tennis and basketball
courts and picnic areas. And as the home of the U.S. National
Triathlon Association, the rolling hills and clear water lakes make an
ideal backdrop for events such as the Lake Louisa Sprint Triathlon Series,
where contestants swim a quarter mile, bike 7 miles and run the final 1.5
miles to the finish.
Tourists and residents
alike enjoy Clermont's various attractions, such as the Hall of
President's Museum, Showcase of Citrus and the Lakeridge Winery, the
State's largest. The Citrus Tower, a symbol of days gone past when
agriculture was king, still stands majestically at the Intersection of
Highways 50 and 27.
